Ever been to sea, Billy?
Okay, maybe not.
But Dave Roberts, commodore of the Algoma Sailing Club, is inviting
anyone who'd like to go out on the lake in a sailboat to come down for
the last race of the season on Saturday.
Roberts says sailing is a lot cheaper than people may think.
On Saturday, it's free for anyone who'd like to crew on one of the
racing boats.
"As you can see, we're all getting a little long in the
tooth," said Roberts.
He's inviting people to come and learn to sail for free, regardless of
experience level, by crewing during the race.
"We gather here [at the Sailing Club beside Bellevue Park] about
12:30 in the afternoon. Then we decide who's going on what boat,"
said Roberts.
Algoma Sailing Club members offer people the opportunity to crew on
their boats for the social opportunity and to make would-be sailors
aware of the club and what it has to offer.
They extend the invitation to crew every Saturday during the season,
which starts again in June.
Roberts says they're usually out on the water by about 1 p.m. and back
to moorings by about 3:30 or so, depending on the weather and how much
fun they are having when they cross the finish line. |
