Algoma Sailing Club: Calculate ASP Racing Ratings

Every club has it's own freedom or "own set of rules" until they participate in a provincial or national event. In some clubs the rules are few and generall, whereas others are exact and precise. Also when racing with all types of sail boats in the same race and with few of the same type or class of boats, makes for an interesting race, but is harder to judge your own performance.

At the Algoma Sailing Club the following is done to Score, and Calculate Adjusted Speed Potentials;

1) First the Manufactor's Speed potential (SP) value of your boat must be obtained. If one cannot be found then values from www.phrf-lo.org or www.ussailing.org will be used and selected by the Fleet Captain.

2) Then the Algoma Sailing Club can apply it's own adjustment values (ADJ) to the SP to give you an adjusted sped potential value (ASP), that may include the following;

Engine ADJ:
2 blade solid prop.+12
3 blade solid prop. +24
3 blade in apture +12
Outboard not retracted +24

Head Sail ADJ:
Uses Furling +6
Smaller than 115% +3
115.1% - 135% +6
135.1% - 155% 0 (normally factory spec.)
155.1% - 165% -3
165.1% - 175% -6
Larger than 175.1% -9

Moss Sailing Skill ADJ: Must includes the date (year) that each new member joined the club.
Beginner, never sailed < 3 years +8
Beginner, having sailed some 3.1 - 5 years +6
Average Sailor 5.1 - 7 years +4
Intermediate Sailor 7.1 < 9 years +2.

Flying Head Sails ADJ: (Spinnakers, Chutes, Drifters) +18
For those who can only use a jib/genoa and a mainsail in a flying head sails race.

3) You will now have two ASP #'s

A) White Sail ASP (jib/genoa and main)
B) Flying Head ASP (Spinnakers, Chutes, Drifters and main)

4) Then your Correction Factor for each ASP can be calculated using the following formula (or use the lookup table below).

Formula: SQRT(((282.26/(SP+301.4))^2)+0.123)

5) Race Time: Elapsed You can record your race times on our map/scoring sheet.

When the Fleet Captain sounds the "Race Started Horn" each boat starts their own clock regardless of their position. Your clock can only be stopped when you cross over the finish line. It is best to use a stop watch for this. Then calculate your race time from the difference between the two. For time on distance the watch is started/stopped as you cross over the start and finish lines.

eg: Rusty Boat, asp 145, factor 0.7231
start time: 7:00:00
end time: 8:15:20
time or stopwatch: 1:15:20

6) Elapsed Time: In Seconds

Your time must now be converted into seconds hence;

Elapsed time is in seconds. (hour + minutes + seconds)
eg: 1 hour = 3,600 sec. eg: 1 minute = 60 seconds.

1:15:20 = (3600 + (15 X 60) + 20)
1:15:20 = 4520 seconds

7)  Corrected Time

Your corrected time can be calculated by using either of the following formulas;

A) Corrected Time on Time = (Elapsed Time x Correction Factor)
eg: (4520 X 0.7231) = 3268 seconds, Rusty boat

B) Corrected Time on Distance = (Elapsed time (sec) - (Distance (nm) x ASP)
eg: (4520 X - (19 x 145)) = 3665, Rustys boat for 19 miles.

8) Scores and Position Ratings

Your score and position for each race can now be compiled against other competitors and viewed online (check the River Race Series Results and Special Race Results). This includes any penalties eg: DNF, DNS, DSQ, and DNC.

9) Rules & Protests

The General Racing Rules can be found within the Algoma Sailing Club Bi-Laws, Section 10 Racing Rules. The racing Bi-Laws rules can only be changed by a vote at an Executive Meeting.

If you encounter any errors, or feel that an ASP or Factor value is incorrect, then contact your Fleet Caption of the sailing committee. Possibly it was an oversight or typo, from the score sheet to the database to the website. Failing to resolving any issues  a formal written protest can be presented at an Executive Meeting which may require your attendance.
